Meet the Tutors

AdamQuinnColorAdam Quinn is a senior English major from Decatur, Alabama. He has been a CRC tutor for two years. Adam is the editor of the Opinion section for the Samford Crimson, serves as President of Sigma Tau Delta (the English honor society), and is a John Howard Scholar. As far as his other hobbies, he admits that not only does he love to play board games, he and his brothers have actually designed and built a few board games of their own. When asked about his biggest writing pet peeve, he explained that he hates when people refer to authors by their first names. “Unless Will snapchats you, stick to Shakespeare,” he says. Finally, as a former member of his high school debate team, he is an expert at avoiding the dreaded “um” while giving speeches and loves to help students improve their public speaking.

“I came to the CRC often during my freshman and sophomore years when I was struggling with a University Fellows course load,” explained Adam. “The CRC tutors saved my grades and my confidence as they helped me through every step of the writing process. As I became more and more confident as a writer, I began to want to help other student in the same way. Good writing opens doors to a thousand opportunities.”

Adam works Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

DSCN7824Anna Lautenschlager is a senior Religion major and Latin American Studies minor from Alpharetta, Georgia. Anna has been tutoring in the CRC for two years. She is a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority as well as the Preministerial Scholars Program. Additionally, she is a Latin American Studies Scholar. She writes opinion pieces for the Crimson and is a fan of all things Disney. If she had to describe herself in one word, she would choose “passionate.” Her biggest grammatical pet peeve is when people mix up to, too, and two.

“I tutored in high school, and I love writing,” says Anna. “I also love getting to know and encourage people. I am really laid back, so if I tutor you, don’t be nervous about me reading your paper!”

Anna works Mondays from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m and 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

DSCN7778Hannah Reynolds is a senior Psychology major and Asian Studies minor from Maryville, Tennessee. She is a CRC veteran as she has been tutoring for three years. Hannah enjoys hanging out with Friends (the TV show, not the people), listening to music, Netflix-ing, and worshiping Jesus with people. She is involved with Samford’s international club, and if she had to describe herself in one word, she would choose “easy-going.” Her biggest grammatical pet peeve is when people neglect the Oxford comma. “I won’t ‘correct’ it on your paper since it’s not technically a rule, but be sure that I noticed and that it influenced my opinion of you. Just kidding, of course…but I really did notice,” she laughs.

“I genuinely enjoy being a tutor because it allows me to help people in some small way,” says Hannah. “I’d love to help you any way that I can!”

Hannah works Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

DSCN7805Kaleena Woodruff is a senior Communication Studies major from Huntersville, North Carolina. She has been tutoring in the CRC for a year. Kaleena is the student director of NorthStar Youth Ministries, and in her free time, she enjoys reading and participating in book club, knitting, singing, daydreaming, and creative writing. She also loves Indian food, superheros, and trivia. Her biggest grammatical pet peeve is when people use adjectives in place of adverbs. If she had to describe herself in one word, it would be “imaginative.”

“I love words and communicating, and I want to be a resource for students at any stage of the communicative process,” says Kaleena.

Kaleena works Mondays from 12:00 p.m. until 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Wednesdays from 12:00 p.m. until 12:30 p.m., and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Megan Burr is a senior English major and Film Production minor from Guntersville, Alabama. She has been a tutor for two years. Megan serves as the Film Club president and the wide angle film editor, and she is a member of Sigma Tau Delta. After graduation, she plans to attend film school to get an MFA in Screenwriting. When she is not working with the film club, she enjoys horseback riding, long walks on the beach, and terrible cliches. If she had to choose one word to describe herself, she would choose “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”

“I chose to be a tutor because I wanted to help people become better writers and speakers, and that’s why I enjoy it, really” says Megan.

Megan works Mondays from 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m., Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Wednesdays from 12:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

DSCN7788Chandler McLarren is a junior Communication Studies major and Sociology minor from Zionsville, Indiana. She has been tutoring for one year. She is involved in RUF at Samford, and she enjoys playing Frisbee, making peanut butter sandwiches (leave the jelly at home kids), spending quality time with friends, and watching her two favorite television shows: Top Gear and Friends. “I am Miss Chanandaler Bong,” she laughs. If she had to describe herself in one word, it would be “compassionate.”

“I really enjoy meeting new people and making them feel like superstar writers or speakers,” says Chandler.

Chandler works Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.

ExodusHeadshots-8Claire Per-Lee is a junior Journalism and Mass Communication major and Spanish minor from Atlanta, Georgia. She has been tutoring in the CRC for one year. She a John Howard Scholar, a staff member for Exodus Magazine, and she serves as a resident assistant for freshman in Pittman. She also enjoys coffee (probably more than any average human should), knitting, Chipotle, going to the beach, country music concerts, and traveling. Her absolute favorite place in the world is Roatan, Honduras. She is a shameless Step Sing fanatic, and her love language is sarcasm. If she had to describe herself in one word, it would be “thoughtful.”

“Peer tutoring is how I developed my voice as a writer in middle school and high school,” says Claire, “so I love having the opportunity to help other students develop their voices, too. This process is so valuable, and the CRC creates a truly unique atmosphere conducive to both tutoring as well as building relationships.”

Claire works Mondays from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

DSCN7798James Brimm is a junior History major from Gallatin, Tennessee. If he had to describe himself in one word, he would classify himself as “eccentric.” As one of our more seasoned tutors, he has been working in the CRC for nearly two years. When he is not working in the CRC, James invests in the Samford community through RUF. Like any good tutor, he enjoys collecting and reading books in his free time. Most of his favorite authors are British and/or dead, but some of the authors that he enjoys are still writing such as J.K. Rowling, Matthew Pearl, and Joe Abercrombie. When asked about his biggest grammatical pet peeve, he said, “It is extremely difficult not to say ‘fewer’ after hearing someone use ‘less’ in the wrong situation.”

“I enjoy tutoring because of the number of people I get to interact with outside of my normal circles,” says James. “Their views are always interesting, and I enjoy helping them express those views.”

James works Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

DSCN7813Kristina Emmerson is a junior Marine Biology major and Writing minor from Huntsville, Alabama. She has been a tutor for one year. She is a John Howard Scholar, a member of the Beta Beta Beta biology honor society, and a participant in the German club. She enjoys reading, making stained glass, watching crime and detective shows, listening to music, and baking.  She can speak German and is a strong supporter of the Oxford comma. If she had to describe herself in one word, it would be “practical.”

“Being a tutor is a rewarding experience because you get to offer someone a fresh perspective on his or her topic and work,” says Kristina. “Simply providing feedback reinvigorates students in their writing process. It’s especially gratifying when a student catches on and begins to identify and correct things you point out. I know how helpful it can be to have a fresh pair of eyes on your work, and I like being able to give that to others.”

Kristina works Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

DSCN7775Paige Van de Vuurst is a junior Biology major and Environmental Studies minor from Johnson City, Tennessee. If she had to choose one word to describe herself, it would be “enigma.” Paige has been a tutor in the CRC for one year, but she is also involved in lots of other Samford organizations including Alpha Omicron Pi, the Tri Beta biology honor society, and the ODK leadership society. She volunteers with the Samford theater department and serves as the vice president for the Restoring Eden initiative on campus. She is a certified advanced open water scuba diver and loves all things outdoors. “If it involves bugs, dirt, trees or critters of all shapes and sizes then count me in!” she says. When she isn’t outside, scuba diving or playing in the dirt, Paige loves traveling or enjoying poetry, and of course, as any good college student does, she always appreciates a good Netflix binge.

“I’ve always believed that good writing and good communication skills are necessary for all people in all walks of life,” says Paige. “The ability to convey to the world what you think, feel, and believe is imperative to the modern working world, and without these abilities I believe that one can miss out on a major part of the human experience. If I can help other people in honing these skills, I will count that as a great honor and as a win in my book.”

Paige works Mondays from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Abby Johnson is a sophomore Education major from Olive Branch, Mississippi. She has been a tutor for one year. Abby is a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and she also serves as a resident assistant for freshman in Vail. She enjoys spending time with her friends, reading books, and traveling. In fact, she recently traveled to South Asia to hike the Himalayas. If she had to describe herself in one word, she would choose “compassionate.”

“My visits to the CRC greatly impacted my growth as a writer during my freshman year,” says Abby. “I wanted to become a tutor to provide the same safe environment for other students at Samford. I love being able to assist students in reaching their full potential as writers.”

Abby works Mondays from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

DSCN7795Rachel Sinclair is a sophomore Journalism and Mass Communication major and marketing minor from Birmingham, Alabama. She has been tutoring for one year. If she had to describe herself in one word, it would be “dedicated.” Rachel keeps herself busy as the editor of the Sojourn literary arts magazine while also writing for the Samford Crimson. She loves peanut butter, country music, Downton Abbey, Christmas, catch phrase, and icing (not necessarily in that order). Her biggest grammatical pet peeve is when people forget the “FANBOYS Comma.”

“I chose to be a tutor because I love helping students reach their full potential as writers,” says Rachel. “Every Samford student is gifted in some area of academics, and I want to help students strive to be the best writers they can be during their undergraduate career.”

Rachel works Mondays from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
